Overview

Modern Idlib is the gateway to one of the most extraordinary Late Antique landscapes in the world: roughly 700 abandoned Byzantine villages, churches, and monasteries scattered across the limestone massif.

History

Surrounded by Ebla, the Dead Cities, and Apamea — three of the densest archaeological zones in the Levant. The Idlib Museum houses the cuneiform tablets recovered from Ebla.

  Idlib Museum

  Compact regional museum housing the cuneiform tablets and royal statuary recovered from Ebla — the most important pre-Akkadian archive in the world.

  Ebla (Tell Mardikh)

  Bronze Age capital that flourished c. 2400 BCE, where Italian archaeologists uncovered 17,000 tablets in 1975.

  Serjilla

  Best-preserved of the Dead Cities — a complete 5th-century Byzantine village with bath house, tavern, churches, and tombs.

  Al-Bara

  Largest of the Dead Cities, with two pyramid-roofed tombs that are among the most striking funerary monuments in the Late Antique world.

  Saint Simeon Stylites Basilica

  Octagonal cruciform church built around the column on which Simeon stood for 37 years — a foundational monument of Byzantine pilgrimage architecture.

  Ariha Olive Groves

  The terraced olive country south of the city — the source of much of Syria's olive oil and the famed soap of Aleppo.
