Overview

Ruweiha is an ancient limestone village in the Jabal Zawiya area of Idlib. Its churches, substantial houses and funerary monuments illuminate rural life in Roman and Byzantine northern Syria. The northern basilica is among its most striking surviving buildings, with monumental stonework that reflects the resources of a prosperous settlement. Ruweiha is part of the Ancient Villages of Northern Syria World Heritage property, inscribed in 2011. Its individual page documents one component of the existing inscription rather than adding another site to Syria’s UNESCO total.
