Overview

The fifth-century basilica at Qalb Lozeh is a major monument of early Christian architecture in northern Syria. Its broad nave, substantial arches, carved limestone and monumental western front illustrate a mature local building tradition. The church stands in a living village, whose community should not be confused with the ancient monument’s original congregation. Qalb Lozeh belongs to the Ancient Villages of Northern Syria World Heritage property, inscribed in 2011; it is a component of that shared inscription, not an additional UNESCO site.
