Overview
Qara is a Qalamoun highway town near the Lebanese border whose Monastery of Saint James the Mutilated (Deir Mar Yaqoub) preserves some of the finest medieval wall paintings in the Levant — a cycle of 11th- to 13th-century frescoes rediscovered under later plaster.
History
A stop on the caravan route between Damascus and Homs since antiquity, Qara's churches were repeatedly converted, plastered and reused. Restoration campaigns from the 1990s revealed layered frescoes of the Last Judgement and saints' cycles in Mar Yaqoub, which was refounded as a working monastic community.
