Overview

Bakh'a, also called al-Sarkha, is one of the three Qalamoun communities historically associated with Western Neo-Aramaic. Years of conflict displaced its residents; the language's present-day use in the village should not be assumed. Its community and speech tradition remain part of Syria's endangered linguistic heritage.

Significance

One of the few ancestral communities of Western Neo-Aramaic, whose speakers were displaced by war.
