Deir ez-Zor

Overview

Deir ez-Zor straddles the Euphrates River in eastern Syria. The city is the closest major centre to two of the world's most important Bronze Age sites — Mari and Dura-Europos.

History

Roman frontier zone, later Abbasid administrative centre. The famous suspension footbridge across the Euphrates, opened in 1927, became a symbol of the city.

  Euphrates Suspension Bridge

  A graceful 1927 French-built pedestrian suspension bridge — the symbol of the city, destroyed in 2013 and partially rebuilt.

  Sumerian-period metropolis on the lower Euphrates with the famous 300-room Palace of Zimri-Lim and its 25,000-tablet archive.

  Hellenistic-Roman frontier town abandoned in 256 CE — preserves the earliest Christian house church and a fully painted synagogue.

  Long riverfront promenade where families gather at dusk to catch the breeze off the river.

  Armenian Genocide Memorial

  A church and memorial complex commemorating Armenians who perished in the death marches of 1915–1916 that ended on this stretch of the Euphrates.

  Spectacular Byzantine fortress upstream from the city, built by Justinian on a high bend in the river.
