Raqqa

Overview

Founded by Alexander the Great's general Seleucus I as Nicephorium and refounded by the Abbasid caliph al-Mansur as al-Rafiqa, Raqqa briefly served as the imperial capital of Caliph Harun al-Rashid (796–809 CE).

History

The horseshoe-shaped Abbasid walls and the Baghdad Gate still trace the 8th-century city plan. Lake Assad and the Tabqa Dam on the Euphrates lie to the west.

  Baghdad Gate

  An 8th-century brick gateway in the horseshoe-shaped Abbasid city wall — one of the few intact monuments of caliphal-era Raqqa.

  Qasr al-Banat

  The 'Palace of the Maidens' — partial remains of an Abbasid palace with iwan and stucco fragments.

  Heraqla

  A monumental square-on-circle Abbasid victory monument 8 km west of the city, commemorating Harun al-Rashid's Byzantine campaign.

  Lake Assad

  Vast reservoir on the Euphrates created by the 1973 Tabqa Dam — Syria's largest body of water.

  Resafa (Sergiopolis)

  Spectacular walled Byzantine pilgrimage city in the steppe south of Raqqa, with a 6th-century basilica and immense gypsum walls.

Traveller Tips

• ›Raqqa was extensively damaged in 2017 and reconstruction is ongoing — confirm current security and access before travel.
• ›Resafa, an hour south, is one of the most atmospheric ruins in Syria and is more visitor-friendly than the city itself.
• ›Spring (March) brings the desert truffle (kamaa) season — a regional delicacy.

What to Eat

• Kamaa (Desert Truffles)

  Sandy desert truffles foraged from the steppe in spring, grilled or stewed — a celebrated seasonal eastern dish.

• Kebab Raqqawi

  Local grilled kebab style heavy on cumin and dried lime.

• Freekeh with Lamb

  Roasted green wheat simmered in lamb stock — the eastern grain staple.

Where to Stay

• Limited reconstruction

  Very limited

  The city's prewar hotels were destroyed; only basic guesthouses operate. Most travellers visit on a long day trip from Aleppo.
