Overview

Tell Mozan, between Amuda and Qamishli in Al-Hasakah, is identified with the ancient Hurrian city of Urkesh. Excavations uncovered a royal palace, a monumental temple terrace and a deep ritual shaft. Inscribed seal impressions naming the rulers Tupkish and Uqnitum helped establish the identification of the city. Urkesh offers an important perspective on Hurrian political, religious and material culture in the third millennium BCE. The excavation photograph records an earlier research season and does not establish the site’s current conservation or visitor access.
