Overview

Tell Brak rises above the plains of the Syrian Jazira in Al-Hasakah. Its expansion in the late fifth and fourth millennia BCE makes it a key site for understanding the emergence of cities in northern Mesopotamia. In the third millennium BCE it was the centre of the kingdom of Nagar. Excavations revealed the Eye Temple, associated with small stone eye idols, and a monumental building from the Akkadian period. The mound preserves several periods of occupation; the visible landscape should not be mistaken for a fully reconstructed ancient city.
