Overview

Held by the Knights Templar until their evacuation in 1291, the fortress of Tortosa enclosed an entire town; the modern old city is built inside its surviving curtain walls.

Significance

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Tortosa, inside the walled town, is the best-preserved Crusader church in the Levant.

  • Walk the lanes inside the curtain wall in the late afternoon — washing-lines and shutters frame the Crusader stonework in a uniquely living way.
  • Take a boat to Arwad and stay for grilled fish on the harbour.
  • The Tartus Museum (inside the cathedral) is small but excellent — allow an hour.
