Overview
Shayzar Castle stands on a rocky hill beside the Orontes River, about 30 km northwest of Hama. Ancient references record the settlement as Caesar and Senzar; it was called Larissa in the Seleucid period, before its older name, Shayzar, returned. Locally it is also called Qal'at Sijar.
Significance
The castle's origins are traced to the Seleucid period, in the late fourth century BCE. It later passed to the Romans and Byzantines. In 17 AH (638 CE), Arab forces under Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah took it from the Byzantines. Its position made it a strategic gateway for those entering Syria from Antioch; later Byzantine attempts to hold it did not last.
Notable Features
- Limestone walls founded on the natural rock
- Steep western cliff above the Orontes
- Fortified towers along the walls
- Historic stone entrance
Major Attractions
Walls and western cliff
The limestone fortifications rest directly on the rocky base. On the western side, the steep drop makes the walls seem exceptionally tall above the river.
Towers and entrance
A series of towers strengthened the castle walls; the stone gateway opens onto the fortified hilltop.
Orontes setting
The castle's position beside the river explains its long importance on the approach from Antioch into inland Syria.
Visitor Tips
