Overview
Built on a Byzantine foundation and captured by Saladin in 1188 after a two-day siege, this castle perches on a forested ridge separated from the mountain by a rock-cut moat 28 metres deep.
Significance
Jointly inscribed by UNESCO in 2006 with Crac des Chevaliers as an outstanding example of Byzantine, Crusader, and Ayyubid military architecture.

Rock-cut Moat & Needle
A 28 m-deep, 156 m-long channel hand-hewn from solid rock, with a freestanding limestone needle left in place to support the drawbridge.

The square keep on the western edge with walls 5 m thick — the strongest point of the Crusader defences.

Byzantine Citadel
The original 10th-century inner fortress at the eastern (lower) end of the ridge, separated by a second internal wall.
