Overview

Built of glittering gypsum blocks on the open steppe, Resafa grew from a Roman frontier post into Sergiopolis, one of the great pilgrimage cities of the Christian East, centred on the martyrium of Saint Sergius. The Umayyad caliph Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik later made it his desert residence, and Christian basilicas and Islamic palaces stood side by side.

Significance

On Syria's UNESCO tentative list; among the most complete late-antique walled cities anywhere, with vast underground cisterns and monumental basilicas standing to full height in an empty landscape.

    A triple-arched ceremonial gate with deeply undercut acanthus carving — the finest piece of 6th-century architectural sculpture in the Syrian steppe.

    The great pilgrimage church, its arcades and apse still standing high, built to receive crowds venerating Saint Sergius.

  • The Cisterns

    Three vaulted reservoirs cut deep below the city, one holding some 15,000 m³ — the engineering that made a city possible here.

  • The Walls

    An unbroken white circuit with towers you can walk beside for two kilometres, dazzling at midday.

  • Hisham's Palace complex

    Traces of the Umayyad residence and audience halls that made Resafa a caliphal desert capital.

Visitor Tips

  • Bring all your own water and food — there is nothing at the site.
  • Sunrise and sunset turn the gypsum pink and gold; midday glare is punishing.
  • Access is via the Raqqa–Palmyra desert road; check current road conditions locally before travelling.
  • A 4x4 or a driver used to the steppe track is strongly recommended.
