Overview

Seventeen surviving norias — vast wooden waterwheels up to 21 m across — lift water from the Orontes into stone aqueducts that once fed Hama's gardens, mosques and houses. The mechanism is Roman in origin, but the wheels themselves are medieval and Ottoman, rebuilt from timber generation after generation, and they still turn with a low continuous moan that defines the sound of the city.

Significance

On Syria's UNESCO tentative list; the largest and best-preserved ensemble of monumental waterwheels in the world, and a rare living hydraulic technology rather than a ruin.
