Overview
Founded as the mainland city of Arwad, Amrit preserves the most complete Phoenician religious complex anywhere: a rock-cut sacred basin with a cube-shaped shrine standing in the water, colossal funerary towers known locally as al-Maghazil (the spindles), and the oldest known stadium in the Near East.
Significance
On Syria's UNESCO tentative list; its Ma'abed temple is the best-surviving example of Phoenician-Achaemenid sacred architecture, and its stadium predates the Greek Olympic stadia in the region.
